Cosmic Cactus Quilt -Scrappy Version
Can you believe it’s been over a year since the release of the Cosmic Cactus quilt pattern!
I’ve been meaning to share this scrappy baby size version which a finished a while ago and only just got around to taking photos!
For this quilt I wanted to make a scrappy version using fat quarters from my fabric stash. This also creates a wonderful scrappy background of fabric solids and prints of subtly different shades.
As all the fabric was random fat quarters from my stash I can’t tell you what all the fabric are! I do know the Swaying Sloths Sky and Be Banana fabric are from the Selva collection from AGF’s.
These Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Colours are a close match. View a digital mockup with these colours on QuiltInk to colour, download or share.
This colour palette was also created so I could have a colourful quilt to go with my new lounge!
The star is the centre piece of this quilt and I wanted to something subtly different from the pattern. Some centre star options are outlined here.
There are cutting diagrams to help make the cutting process much easier. Plus fabric labels to keep track of all the bits and pieces as you sew.
This was the perfect time to try out the fussy cut option for the square-in-a-square block to include the super cute sloth fabric. Don’t worry if you haven’t paper pieced! The pattern has detailed instructions, plus there’s a Square-in-a-Square Block Paper Piecing tutorial with plenty of photos to guide you through the process.
I was able to use up the leftover fabrics by making a scrappy backing and binding. The main backing fabric is Diamond Grid in Shitake from the Collection CF by Carolyn Friedlander. There’s a tutorial on Make a Scrappy Binding outlining how to create an unique and beautiful binding.
Karen @quiltingonthecoast a longarm quilter local to me completed this edge to edge design called ‘gingersnap’. I really love how the swirly lines work with this design.
