Kaleidoscopic array - Pattern Release

I’m delighted to announce the Kaleidoscopic Array pattern is now available!

This post outlines everything you need to know about the Kaleidoscopic Array pattern + stick around to see the Pattern Testers Parade at the end!

Kaleidoscopic Array Quilt

This scrappy quilt was made using precuts + Noughts & Crosses Layout.

This pattern started as one, but has now become two distinct patterns, allowing you to choose the best option for you. Also available as pattern bundle, you get both patterns allowing you to make all quilt options.

  • Option 1: Modern Strip Pieced Method - Makes a modern quilt using fabric yardage in six colours. The block units come together quickly with cutting and sewing instructions for strip piecing.

  • Option 2: Traditional Individually Pieced Method - This options makes a scrappy quilt using a variety of fabric precuts and/or use your leftover fabric scraps. Assembling the block units requires you to sew individual block pieces together.

A baby size quilt made using the Modern (strip piecing method) which I plan to make into a dog bed, with a tutorial to come soon!

For this quilt I dived into my stash of fabrics to make a throw size semi-scrappy quilt. I say ‘semi-scrappy’ as you can see the different fabrics in the quilt, but they are all used together in the one block and not mixed up throughout the quilt. You can certainly go fully scrappy if you have a sizeable collection of leftover fabrics or want to mix up the fabrics more.

I made this quilt using the Traditional (Scrappy & Ombré) pattern, meaning all the block units are individually pieced. This a labour of love, with the cutting and sewing block units taking longer. But just look at the result! I love how the pink and oranges just ‘pop’ with the other more neutral or subtle colours in the background. Plus the scrappy noughts and crosses add another layer of interest to the design. The pattern outlines how you can achieve a scrappy quilt, including sorting your fabrics. You even decide to try an ombré quilt!

If you are after a small project, then try the pillow! I really wasn’t sure how I was going to quilt the block, but it soon became evident that this block needed something special to bring the block to life. And I couldn’t be happier with the results! I’ve put instructions on my blog so you can try some machine quilting.

Whatever layout, colourway or quilt size you decide to make, have fun and enjoy the process of making a handmade quilt.

Please share your finished quilts #kaleidoscopicarraypattern

Lou Lou & Betty is a culmination of my love of quilting, designing and sharing my quilting knowledge. From an early age I’ve had a love of craft and one early memory is spending my school holidays learning how to sew on my Mum’s sewing machine. After a number of years moving around on military postings, I’ve finally settled in the beautiful beachside city of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

I design modern quilt patterns that are thoughtfully written. In addition, tutorials are available on our website that allow even a beginner to complete their first quilt project. Discover how you can make a quilt with a basic sewing machine and quilting tools, so you can fall in love with this craft. With a growing library of resources, PDF patterns, quilt fabric kits and curated fabric bundles, take a look at what Lou Lou & Betty has to offer.
